The undomestic goddess by Sophie Kinsella

My first review of the year, guys!!. And since it’s the month of Love, I just thought why not start with some romcom / romantic fiction. *big smile*. And here I am with “The undomestic goddess” by Sophie Kinsella.

This book was set in the early 2,000’s when technology was not yet as advanced as it is today. Think Blackberry days and you’ll get the drift. And it’s centered around the life of Samantha, a 29 years old woman , who through a life altering career mistake found herself plummet from being a big time, hot shot Lawyer to being a housekeeper.

Sounds a bit unconventional right ? Yes, I thought so too. Now without saying too much and ruining the plot of the book for those who haven’t read it yet, I’m just going to give a short review.

My Review

In my opinion, this is not one of Sophie Kinsella’s best works. Because for starters, how on earth does a Lawyer end up choosing being a housekeeper / gardener’s wife over earning a 6 figure salary. And the chance of being a partner at one of the top law firms in the country. I would assume that she would have pushed for more flexible working hours since the ball was now in her court as a result of the firm wanting her so much.

So because of that, I found the ending chapters of the book very flat, underwhelming and a little ridiculous. Which means I cringed hard. As for the romantic bit of the book, I feel like it was a little bit rushed. Because I wasn’t able to see the build up of chemistry between the main character of the book, Samantha and her beau, Nathaniel.

What I think of the undomestic goddess by Sophie Kinsella

So that part felt a little bit sudden and out of place for me. But generally, if you’re just looking for something light. Something to give you a breather in between reading more emotionally tasking or involving books, this can be a good read. Because there is a bit of humor / comedy as is usually the case with most of the author’s books.

But in my opinion, compared to her other works that I’ve read, think “twenties girl” and “the shopaholic series” which I absolutely fell in love with, this didn’t cut it for me. And that’s just what I think but who knows, you may like it. Because it’s not totally a bad book. It just won’t rank high on my list of best Sophie Kinsella books.

If you’ve read this, please share what you think in the comments section. I would love to hear from you.
