Postponing today’s happiness to the future

Why not “ I am happy now” instead of “I will be happy when”.

Living for the future and not for the present is one way to drive fulfillment far away from you. And this is how it sometimes starts:

First, you set a goal. Then you say to yourself “When I achieve this goal, I’ll finally have peace and be happy”. SIGH…

Now, in as much as there is nothing wrong with setting goals. The bad part comes when you postpone the happiness of your present self to the future when you attain that goal.

In material things

People say I’ll be happy when I’m finally able to buy that car. Or I’ll be happy when I’m able to afford a designer shoe or I’ll be happy when I buy a house. And then great, you finally get that thing. But end up feeling feel flat and empty.

Because there is no true happiness in acquiring things. All you get is a few minutes high and that’s it. So if you’re someone who is not fully grounded. And satisfied in who you are as a person, that happy destination you planned in your head could end up becoming a very miserable and unfulfilled one.

And then…

You start chasing the next big thing, which goes on and on and on like a big whorl. Doing the same thing but expecting a different result.

One way I allow myself to fully live and experience the present is to stay mindful of myself, the people around me and my environment. Whilst showing gratitude for the things that I do have now. And trusting in the process by giving myself assurances of everything turning out great in the end.

I’ve done all I can at the present to have a stable and secure future. And since “Now” is all I really have to make the best decisions for the future, I’m choosing to work on those whilst still allowing myself joy. And seeing the silver lining in my present circumstances.

Today is yesterday’s future. So why not be happy for the “who” you are right now rather than wait for the future “You” that may or may not happen.
