Why you sometimes feel lonely amongst friends

I noticed something recently….

Sometimes, people only want to be friends with you because of some perceived type of success they noticed in you. Not because they genuinely like you or what you stand for. But because they want to associate with that success they think you have. Which I think is a bad foundation to build a friendship on.

It’s why a lot of well to do people talk about being lonely even when they have a wealth of people around them. And this is because they are surrounded by people who are only with them for the perceived glitz and glam surrounding them rather than for who they are as a person. Justin Beiber’s “lonely” song in his Justice album is an example. We all need genuine friends no matter who we are. That longing to love and be loved back is inherently present in all humans.

Because we are social beings. We want people who can relate with us. People we can rely on and people we can be ourselves around. Friendships and what they really stand for in the real sense of the word are one of the ways we can navigate this world better.

So being genuine friends with someone and later finding out that someone was only with you because of what they seemingly want to get out of it can be deeply hurtful. It makes you feel immaterial, useless and of zero importance. Like if I didn’t have all these money or influence, does that mean I become someone you can’t be seen with. Someone without value and someone of zero importance.

We all need quality friendships to do this life better. Friendships where we are not second guessing loyalty from the other person. Friendships that are true, friendships where we both really like and value each other. And friendships where we don’t feel used in any way.

What do you think of this piece? Can you relate with it? If you can, please share your thoughts in the comments.
